Planning a Brainy Bedroom

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

When we shifted Charlie to a new room last year, the space got a makeover, and now it's Hank's turn for a refresh. As you can imagine, it has been a point of contention that little brother got his own desk when he doesn't even know how to write stories or draw race cars yet. Yup, we turn the injustice up to 11 at the Walker house.

Salty 6-year-old comments aside, it's pretty adorable that Hank is as excited about a desk -- a space all his own to draw, build Legos and tinker -- as he is about getting a bunk bed. After all, this kid is a maker. He figured out how to fold paper airplanes and proceeded to make about 50. It was alarming. We had a paper airplane infestation.

So, it's not surprising that invention, science and creativity need to be central themes in Hank's new room. Editor's note: "Boy's Pad Inspired by the Lab" is definitely the most ridiculous attempt at a clever or punny title to date.

Here are the requests from the client himself:

  • Lots of color -- notably, he's into yellow at the moment

  • Cool, modern lamp -- we saw this one at Crate and Barrel and he went bonkers for it (spoiler alert: bro isn't getting a $200 lamp)

  • Bunk beds -- we'll be using the hand-me-down set that my brothers used when they were kids

  • "Action" -- a vague request for sure. We unpacked that a bit and he said "like motorcycles and rockets and people running fast."

Moonshot: The Inspiration

Three images come to mind that are inspiring this project. Here's why they stand out.

I saved this Instagram post more than two years ago because the large scale moon print on paper (or is it fabric?) just stopped me in my social scroll. I love how the colors are soothing and muted but it's still high impact.

What's not to love about these paper lanterns painted as planets? They bring a ton of color and whimsy to a kids' room, but don't fight the other art and accessories for attention. I am also a huge fan of the painted bunk beds with a classic check on the bedding.

Finally, this one isn't about science or kids stuff, but it is all about a gorgeous pattern mix, a variety of textures and looking classic and polished in a small space.

Ready for Launch: The Game Plan
