The Quest: A Rug of Many Colors

I would like to collect rugs the way some women collect nice shoes and handbags. What's not to love about a good rug? And while budget and square footage constraints keep me from becoming a full-blown rug hoarder, I have definitely embraced swapping rugs from room to room or selling rugs to purchase new ones.

At this point my husband should just be on alert whenever I start selling things on Craigslist. My frugal nature usually requires some cash in hand to justify my next project. Here's what I've sold in the last month: a rug, a side table, a pair of lamp shades and some linen curtains we never ended up using. Thanks, Craigslist, for funding my next project.

My younger son is getting a newly decorated room (more on the how and why of the project in the next post). Knowing I'll be reusing a few items from his current decor and some heirloom Western-themed books as a jumping off point, I made a beeline to my happy place: sourcing rugs.

I was going for tribal.

Once I had settled on a few options, my husband, still unclear on why I was looking for rugs at all said, "I don't really like the Navajo style. How about something more fun and geometric?"

This was good information. I could work with this. This was also a blessing in disguise because many rugs in tribal genre are no-pile/low-pile and don't strike me as super durable. I definitely wanted something my three year old could play comfortably on and not destroy.

I returned with some geometric options and also focused on rugs that looked more plush.

If it weren't for the price tag (we need an 8x10) I would have though the West Elm option on the far left was a winner. That design was giving me serious heart eyes. But my husband noted that all of those options were mature and very muted.

Our son loves color. This nudged me down a path that can only be described as "Bill Cosby sweaters as decor".

Please let these bold designs soak in.

Maybe, possibly, perhaps these could be cool... but they're also kind of Coogi, amirite?

In the sea of colorful rugs there were a few, clear standouts.

I had found my rug. I was expecting nature-inspired elements in the room and it reminded me of a sunset. It also had lots of orange -- my son's favorite color. There was no third design presentation on this rug because it was on an insane sale. No talk, just action. Being from Target, I also knew it would be an easy return if things didn't work out.

8x10 normally $307.99 on sale for $215.59
