Planning a Simple Entryway Refresh

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

If first impressions are everything, our guests must have pretty low expectations when they come into our home. Improvements to our "foyer" have taken a back seat to other projects in our house for four years because it's a space where people don't linger long. It's fairly narrow, there's no place to sit and there's nothing to observe or admire. It's just a whole lot of contractor beige.

Another reason I've been reluctant to dive in is that my ideas for the space are so grand. It's been tempting to just wait on the space until we have the budget for a full renovation. What would that look like? Let's take a stroll into fantasy, no-budget world, shall we?

  • Stealing space from the front closet to widen the first few feet of the entry

  • Taking advantage of that additional space and adding a larger front door with sidelights to bring in more light (of course, this also requires a larger exterior landing and a new portico, nooo big deal)

  • Adding tile or stone to a portion of the entry to better accommodate wet shoes and muck

  • Introducing millwork that brings interest to the space

  • Opening a portion of the front stairway for an airier look with balusters

*Snap* OK, dream sequence over.

The folks over at YoungHouseLove.com recently referenced "phase 1 projects" -- a concept they explore in this post -- and it totally struck a chord with me. Why not tackle a few lower-cost updates that don't involve, say, moving walls and that will translate to a phase 2 improvement down the road?

With that in mind, this refresh will be limited to paint, decor and a light swap. Take a look at what I have in mind, below, and stay tuned for future posts on my progress and some crafty, DIY solutions that I'll incorporate to keep my expenses in check.
